  2. automatically on a given course at a given
  3. height and speed.  Devised by US businessman
  4. Lawrence Sperry 1912, the automatic pilot
  5. contains a set of gyroscopes that provide 
  6. references for the plane's course.  Sensors
  7. detect when the plane deviates from this 
  8. course and send signals to the control 
  9. surfaces - the ailerons, elevators, and
  10. rudder - to take the appropriate action.
  11. Autopilot is also used in missiles.
